If you’re looking for a real thrill while on Maui, you need to try the most popular activity on the island. Take a bike ride down the slopes of Haleakala Volcano and you’ll experience many things that most travelers haven’t!
While cruising down Haleakala’s winding roads, you’re able to see Maui in a different way than most. If you drive, you’ll miss out on a lot of views only seen in areas where a bike can stop (and cars can’t.)
We suggest using one of two trusted local bike companies – Skyline Hawaii and Activity Authority – over the others because of their expertise, safety record and overall quality of experience. However, remember that the most important factor that makes them safer is the pace you ride at.
Skyline Hawaii
Though the are primarily known as being the first zipline company in Hawaii, Skyline Hawaii also offers an excellent range of activities on Haleakala Volcano for those seeking an adventure of a lifetime. Their all-inclusive Haleakala Sunrise Bike & Zip tour not only includes round trip transportation from your hotel or condo to the 10,000-foot summit of Haleakala for a sunrise viewing, but a drive back down to the entrance of Haleakala National Park for a 21 switchback downhill bike ride (bicycle and helmet included), as well as a continental breakfast and ride on their 5 scenic ziplines, swinging bridge, and the only pendulum line in Hawaii. Stellar fun! Guests must be 12+ and weigh between 60 and 260 pounds.
Call Skyline Hawaii at 1.808.745.1323 for more information or bookings. You can also see other Ziplines in Maui.
Activity Authority
Self guided Haleakala Bike Tours from Activity Authority depart daily at 7am from Maui’s north shore hippie town of Paia, and include transportation up to the starting point at Haleakala National Park, as well as all equipment and gear for the 26 mile downhill bike ride back to the starting point. Guests are free to take as much time as they want, stopping to take photos at scenic spots, to relax, or even to grab a bite to eat or enjoy a locally roasted cup of coffee. Having been on other bike company tours, we can attest to the additional value in being able to stop for photos or breaks whenever you feel like it. There’s no pressure to catch up with the others.
Book online with Activity Authority or directly at 808.518.2785.
We highly suggest you bring a camera for the times you stop. The views at the crater and along the ride are unparalleled. You’ll also find that bike rides offer a plethora of enticing smells and enchanting views. You pass through a eucalyptus forest, by a lavender farm, and past some flowering trees. The trip really is a feast for all senses.
